#3,889 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Others have said pretty much all there is to say, both good and bad, so ill hit the highlights. The romance was Insta-love/hate, and got old really quick. The 17 year old main girl (no heroine here!) Acts like a boy crazy 13 year old tangibleT h e whole readers/ghosts thing could have been intriguing, but was poorly explained and executed (I was constantly confused and not sure what was going on.....and not in a good, suspenseful way) ......The whole thing was just frustrating! The 'romance' was somehow cheesy, cliche, irritating, eye-roll worthy, and gag worthy all at the sametime....with no good side.I come go on, but overall it was frustrating, confusing and irritating all the way through....with very little redeeming humor or characters.

I honestly can't tell you what prompted me to pick this book up. I've never read this author before, I'd never even heard of this book. It may have been the gorgeous cover, or it may have just been my needing to go back to my original love- Paranormal YA. I had tried it a few times before recently, and the results were never very good. And when I say paranormal I mean TRUE paranormal. Not dystopian or anything to that effect. I had been on such a long kick of New Adult and Contemporary Romance that I needed a break. I read to escape and as amazing as that genre and all of it's kick ass authors are I needed a total, could never in a million years happen unless I was on some kind of psychotic break- kind of escape that only true paranormal could give me. So, when I read this description I thought sure might as well give it a shot. And then it took me forever to actually choose it on my kindle. You ever have those moments when you look at all the pretty book covers on your kindle and say to yourself "why did I download this?" and "what was this one about again?". Welp, I'm ashamed to admit that I did that a few times with this one. But the cover just kept drawing me back. So I decided I would open it up and give it a read. I did this yesterday. I finished it last night. So, yeah.Piper (love the name choice btw) and her younger brother TJ are dealing with the unexpected murder of their mother. Her dad on the other hand isn't really dealing it at all. He instead put them on a boat to a small New England island to live with a grandmother they've never met before. Piper is a typical 17 year old girl. Angry with the world, snippy, full of attitude and sass. But she has a pretty good reason to be. She directs a lot of said sass to her grandmother Rose who, apparently, pretty much runs the island.Enter Zane. Brooding, handsome and kind of a prick. He has secrets, along with many of the people on this island, and Piper is determined to get to the bottom of it.Piper and Zane's intense hate/attraction towards each other is hilariously awesome. So many one liners I want to steal and use on people in real life. And just enough cussing to make me not feel too old for reading this. But Zane is fighting his attraction hard. Harder than someone who just thinks the other person is an entitled "Princess" like he insinuates constantly. There's no way to fully go into the rest of the book without giving A LOT away. So I won't. All I'll say is the paranormal aspect is refreshing. It's a new bit that hasn't been done a million and a half times. The world building is interesting and J.L. Weil has a knack of revealing just enough at each time to keep you satiated. That's not to say I didn't figure out some things here and there on my own, but there were enough twists to keep you hooked. Oh and I'll also say prepare to be PISSED. Because the book ends with this:Piper and Zane's story continues....Black CrowComing in 2016Yeah, you read that correctly. But regardless, thank you J.L. Weil for giving me what I was looking for in a new YA Paranormal series: Love, snarkiness, rarely used type of good/bad guy, angst, and awesome BFFs (you'll love Zoe). Can't wait until (grrr) 2016

White Raven, which is the first book of the Raven series has been in my TBR for a long time now but I'm not really sure how long that is, haha. But I do remember the reason why I added this book in my TBR, aside from the story, I was captivated with its enchanting cover. I love the vibe it exudes which is kind of mysterious, and as you can see with my raging 4 star rating, this one didn't disappoint at all. Actually, I do think I could have given this one a perfect 5 star rating and I'll tell you more about it in a few minutes. With a generous sypnosis like that one above, I'm pretty sure you'll be tempted to try out this story, won't you? And luckily, it's as good as the sypnosis. On the early chapters, we've got to know about Piper (female lead) and what she endured after her mother was murdered. With her father mending a broken heart, he agreed to have Piper and her younger brother TJ spend their summer vacation at Raven Hallow, a small island where their grandmother, whom they never met live. The next chapters started to get more interesting when this hot adonis in the name of Zane Hunter was introduced. And the moment he and Piper were having their moment, I swear, my sanity was nowhere to be found lol. I already know this one's going to be a supernatural story but even if I'm already in the middle part, I'm still groping in the dark what really these people from Raven Hallow are, especially Zane. There's so many questions and mystery this book has that sometimes I think it has more mystery than MHC's books lol. I have my own set of guesses what this story gonna be but I was shocked when I found out what this book is really about. My! I don't want to spoil the fun but I think it's safe to say that there's a lot of reaping going on with this series lol.Oh heck, I don't really want to drop some spoiler but it's hard to shut my mouth especially if I'm this excited, haha. When I found out about Zane, I was really shock. I mean, I wasn't expecting that. When Piper said about his eyes changed when he was engaged into a fight to save her, I was 100% sure that he's a vampire. Haha, I guess I should blame it to my fascination with vampire movies and series eh? When I found out about Zane's true identity, the manga/anime Soul Eater just instantly crosses my mind. I guess it was on the second chapter, it mentioned that Piper loves to sketch which is mostly some anime/manga characters so I think this story is somewhat inspired with the anime Soul Eater eh? Well, come to think about it, they sure share the same idea. Not all though, I think only the idea about reaping and such.I do love the anime and I was really glad that I enjoyed this one too, especially that it involves a hot alpha male, hehe. I personally don't like his name but man! I just can't help but fall in love with him. Well, it's not a surprise since I easily get attracted to bad guys hehe.I'm always a sucker for teen romance too so it was a relief that this one didn't just have a great cover but also has an equally amazing story.Piper is your typical teenager. The angst, the stubbornness, name them all, she has them. She can be too much of a headache too, to the extent that I wanna smack her myself. This story was taken from her own POV and I have to say that I kinda like the way it was written. She can be a pain in the ass but I love her humor. I also love that she somewhat became clumsy when it comes to Zane, haha, their first meeting was kind of hilarious lol. I can't even count how many times I laugh with her choice of words too, haha.Zane on the other hand is mysterious and dangerous, but really really really hot. He's a kind of guy that when you look at him, you already know he's trouble. Piper has been warned a thousand times about him, and I guess I understand why she can't shake off crushing over this bad guy. He's charisma and all is too much to endure that even though how dangerous Piper's situation is, I'm willing to change place if I get to have him, haha sucker. Aside from being an a-class a-hole, he's actions and words we're somewhat confusing. I mean, he's hot and then he's cold all of a sudden. But overall, he's still hot, period. Haha.I actually love the idea, but I find some other things lacking for this story. I don't really want to be a bummer but it can't be helped. Piper's grandmother is like the queen of all the reaper clans so I find it quite questionable why their massive mansion don't have some hordes of guards especially now that their lives were in danger. Plus, Piper walking out of the house without a bodyguard is a no no considering the island is full of reapers lol.Don't get me wrong the fight scenes was intense in this story, but there were times that it's hard to picture them out so I ended up skipping some lines so I could go on to the other scene. But even with those things, overall, I think this story is a great one considering it's the first book of the series. So I'm pretty sure the next book would be more fantastic.I was constantly asking questions over questions while reading this story and I think it was halfway through the book that all were laid out, well, not all actually. There's still a lot of unanswered questions I want to know the answers. So yep, I'll definitely get a copy of the second and the third book soon. This was my first time reading a book from the author and I was really impressed. I love the writing style and I love the idea of this series. So yep, definitely after this review, I'll be stalking the author, haha.If you want teen romance merge into a supernatural settings, then White Raven would be a perfect book for you.

YA, paranormal, first person single POV with a cliffhanger. This is an interesting novel that takes known mythos, shreds it up and spits back out a tale that somehow echoes the original foundation, yet takes on a whole new identity. Ravens, crows, sparrows.... it’s a mystery that quite literally captures the FMC’s life and throws her into an ancient story without enough information.I liked it. There is a Dirty Dancing vibe, along with that shivering feel of the Vampire Diaries, though this tale is wholly its own.Pros:- Unique- You are just as confused as the FMC.- Zane... he’s dark, broody and deadly awesome.- YA, but like other J.L. Weil novels (Saving Angel) it lacks the immaturity of some YA novels, thank goodness.Cons:- Plot is complicated, but not so much that you can’t interpret what happens next. I like being surprised, this didn’t do it.
