It seems the author is well versed in aeronautics, and in that field the book has helped tremendously. However, in other sections such as math and mechanics, there are frequent mistakes. These range from purely typographical errors (claiming a driving gear rotates 10 times in a problem in the sample AFQT, not having any plausible answer choices for the given information, then in the answer stating the same gear rotates 15 times) to mathematical blunders (SIFT exam 2, Math Section, problem 11; the answer does not sum up correctly) to serious errors in misunderstanding the theory (the author states that the mechanical advantage of a hydraulic system the ratio of the diameters of the pistons, where it should be the areas of the pistons OR the inverse of the distance moved. From the text, it appeared the author became confused between the diameter and the distance moved as he assigned both the symbol "d", then continued with his proof after switching them around).Furthermore, the math sections are not nearly challenging enough. In the precursor to the ASTB, it is explained that the math section could present logarithms and inverse exponents, none of these are present in the explanations or sample tests. Conversely, the reading section is more challenging than other study guides, providing multiple answers for each passage that seem correct, though only one is explicitly stated.Though many sections were thorough and informative, and the writing style is fun and comprehensible, I spent far too long proofreading the errors to make sure I was not mistaken (make no mistake: I realized I was the one in error many times, but by no means every time). To be blunt, the significant amount of blunders within the book I was able to find thanks to my previous education makes me wonder what else is incorrect; therefore, the integrity of the entire work is under question.
I purchased this book to study for the AFOQT, which I took in November 2013. I only had 2 weeks to study for this test, while working 12 hour days at work. There was enough information in this book to get me a 92 Pilot, 88 Nav. Also, I had no flight experience of any kind. The flight info sections preceding the practice tests has some pretty good info that sums up many of the basic principles of flight. The practice tests are very close to the actual test.TIME YOURSELF!!! Many people taking the military flight tests do not do well because they simply study the questions and do not take the tests for time. The actual AFOQT is very fast paced and I know people who knew many of the answers but only had time to answer half of the questions. The Instrument Reading section on the actual AFOQT has been updated so that the drawings are much easier to read. Before they were hard to interpret photocopies, so Barron's practice tests show hard to interpret drawings.Overall, this is probably the best practice guide that I saw for the AFOQT, but I only had 2 weeks, so who knows. I learned a lot from this book and it helped me to score well on real AFOQT, so there must be something to it. I hope this helps.
This book helped me prep for the AFOQT tremendously. In my experience with the AFOQT, confidence in your abilities and familiarity with the test structure and material are essential to doing well. This book helps with both. The information is presented well in an easy to read manner and format. There were some discrepancies with the table reading section and my version of the test but other than that it was great. My advice is get this book as well as a few others to use for practice tests and study everyday in some way. You can take and retake sections as many times as possible but ALWAYS time yourself. Like I said earlier this book is great but I recommend supplementing it with others. After going from no experience with flight or navigation I scored well above the required scores for entry and my composite scores are very competitive. Study hard and prep efficiently and you will do great!
Get the GRE review books for math study and math test questions.Same with the reading.This book has a strong (long) mechanical section.I've heard about typos, but I haven't relied on this book much for the math section or reading section. I'll use GRE reviews for that.I'm an engineer so I have a fairly strong hold on the statics/mechanics/physics aspect.I bought the book for the practice tests as well as the information about planes and ships. Complement this book with other books and stuff from airwarriors.com
This was one of the books used to study for the AFOQT. It helped immensely. There were a number of errors. Word of advice: The AFOQT has recently changed (as of Summer 2015) so there are sections that this book will not cover (Know delegations and the roles of different ranks!)
There is no real study guide that will accurately prep you for these tests. Especially the ASTB-E for all you Navy and USMC hopefuls. But you need to use a study book or else you don't have a chance in hell. Also, no book will help out for the flight simulation BS they added. The reading portion will be similar, the math for me was mainly on probability questions, marbles in a bag, decks of cards, dice.. Casino type crap. Know your fractions inside and out! Also, your navy terminology will be useful to know. The book does that well along with theory of flight materials (Camber, flight envelope, pitch, yall, roll). I forgot that an aircraft carrier uses steam for its catapult system. I got that question wrong on the exam! Know how many questions are on each section! I used a outdated Barron's guide for this test that said we had 30 minutes for math with 25 questions. On test day I was caught off guard when they gave me 55 minutes for math and god knows how many questions! Good luck to all!
Slightly out of date and will have sections that you don't need at all since it covers multiple branches' flight aptitude tests, but it's still a great source for studying and a good place to get started.
